Agriculteurs

Throughout the world, millions of young people enter the workforce every year, seeking a better quality of life. In Africa, where the majority of aspiring workers are young, employment outside of agriculture is limited and there are few alternative activities (with the exception of small-scale artisanal businesses). Despite this, there are many opportunities for those with an interest in the agricultural sector to make a difference.

The agriculture sector is a powerful driver of economic growth and development, providing jobs for a large proportion of the population. However, the skills and training required for an effective agriculture sector are largely lacking. Consequently, the quality of agricultural education and training remains a critical issue for the region, especially in countries with low agricultural productivity levels.

Achieving a high level of agricultural education and training is key to developing the agriculture sector, boosting food security, improving living standards and increasing employment. Nonetheless, the challenges are considerable, including limited funding and the need to increase cooperation between agricultural training centres and relevant research institutes.

During the last decade, there has been an increased focus on promoting vocational education and training for the agricultural sector. This has included the development of curricula, the launch of innovative initiatives, and the creation of new pedagogical tools. These efforts are expected to continue in the future.
